The town is named for General David Wooster, a Revolutionary War officer from Connecticut, and the first land claims here were staked in 1808. The Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station opened in Columbus in 1882 and moved to Wooster ten years later, working on the crops the state actually grew, and was renamed the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in 1965. Secrest Arboretum was started on that ground in 1909 by Edmund Secrest, the first state forester of Ohio, who went on to direct the center in 1937; it holds more than two thousand native and introduced trees, shrubs and other plants and was given his name in 1950.
