Alonzo Dee settled here in 1818, and the village took its name in 1837 from a large bend the Cuyahoga makes around it. In the canal years this was a shipping point with boatyards, sandstone quarries, mills and warehouses, and fourteen bars and five hotels working the canal crews and travelers, which gave a landlocked Ohio village the feel of an eastern seaport. The flood of 1913 destroyed much of the canal and the trade went with it. Mules towed boats on the Ohio and Erie Canal from 1827 until that flood, and the towpath still runs the same line through Cuyahoga Valley National Park past Lock 29.
