Sag Harbor sits on a deep Long Island bay between Southampton and East Hampton, a former whaling port now cherished for its Main Street, historic homes, and literary past. A walkable harbor village with a creative, unhurried spirit pairs well with mindful, holistic practice.
The windmill on Long Wharf greets the boats, and the whaling museum up Main Street keeps the town's oldest trade in plain view. A session at home costs no drive to any of the busier villages nearby. Custom essences are mixed to order in Michigan and posted to your door.
The second session of Congress fell on July 31, 1789. After that session, Sag Harbor was named the United States' first official port of entry, and the customs house placed here was Long Island's first. The 1840s were the peak of whaling, and the village handled the processing of the oil. The Old Whalers' Church opened in 1843, and its steeple stood a hundred and eighty-five feet high, taller than anything else on Long Island at the time. The 1938 hurricane brought the steeple down, and it has never been rebuilt. John Steinbeck made his home here from 1955 until his death in 1968. He wrote The Winter of Our Discontent, setting it in a fictional version of the village.
