The city is named for the signal fires lit on the summits above it to warn the Continental Army that British troops were moving on the river. From 1902 to 1978 the Mount Beacon Incline Railway climbed to the fifteen-hundred-and-forty-foot summit on a seventy-four percent grade, one of the steepest anywhere, and carried about three and a half million people before fire and vandalism finished it. In the nineteenth century this was called the hat-making capital of the United States, with nearly fifty factories; Dutchess Hat Works alone was turning out four hundred and fifty dozen a day by 1900. Dia Beacon opened in a former Nabisco box-printing plant in 2003.
