Six miles northeast lies Sugarite Canyon State Park, thirty-six hundred acres straddling the state line, a stream valley walled by basalt cliffs with Bartlett and Little Horse Mesas to the west and Horse Mesa to the east. This is volcanic country: flat-topped mesas, cone-shaped volcanoes and old lava flows belonging to the Raton-Clayton volcanic field, which runs from Fishers Peak Mesa northeast of town out to Rabbit Ear Mountain near Clayton. The park also preserves an early twentieth-century coal-mining camp, right where the Rockies give way to the Great Plains.
