Portales is an eastern-plains college town built around Eastern New Mexico University, peanut and dairy farms, and the ancient Blackwater Draw archaeological site. Its tight-knit campus community and wide prairie horizons make room for grounded, unhurried, wellness-minded routines.

Water from a series of cave mouths southeast of town looked to Spanish speakers like the porches, the portales, of adobe houses, and that is where the name comes from. Doak Good, a cattleman, was the first permanent settler and lived near Portales Springs in the 1880s when it was a watering stop on the Fort Sumner trail. The Pecos Valley Railroad opened the country to commercial farming and this became peanut ground; it is one of the largest producers of Valencia peanuts in the country. The legislature designated Portales for a college in 1927 and Eastern New Mexico University opened in 1934, running as a two-year school until upper-division work was added in 1940.
