The township wraps the City of Holland on the Ottawa County side, with the Macatawa River along its border and the Dutch-named hamlet of Noordeloos inside it. The township was established by the Michigan Legislature on March 16, 1847, as Dutch Calvinist separatists led by Dr. Albertus van Raalte emigrated from the Netherlands amid economic hardship. Van Raalte platted the former village of Cedar Swamp in 1848, and by 1853 the settlement had reached about 1,418 people. The township originally took in what are now Park and Zeeland townships, with Zeeland breaking off in 1851.
It was incorporated as a charter township in 1968, and suburban expansion followed hard: roughly twenty-six percent growth through the 1970s and 27.5 percent through the 1980s turned farmland into subdivisions. Nearly forty thousand people live here now, and the Dutch-heritage hamlet of Noordeloos and the census-designated place of Beechwood both sit largely within the township.
The economy sits inside West Michigan's advanced-manufacturing corridor. Haworth, an office-furniture maker, is headquartered in the Holland area, and food processing is represented by firms including Request Foods. Commercial growth has concentrated along the U.S. 31 and Chicago Drive corridors, with retail centered on The Shops at WestShore.
About 27.8 percent of residents are Hispanic or Latino as of 2020, a community tied to agriculture and food processing and steadily growing alongside the older Dutch Reformed heritage. In 2024 the township opened a $14.7 million community center built into a former Younkers department store at the WestShore mall, with a basketball court, six pickleball courts, an indoor track and a fitness floor.
