Green Oak was erected in 1835 with Brighton Township inside its borders, which makes it the political cradle of Livingston County. Kinsley S. Bingham, a township farmer, went on to become Michigan's first Republican governor, and the township still claims him as its own. Green Oak Station is the old Detroit, Lansing and Northern Railroad depot hamlet on section 11. The hamlet of Rushton sits on Rushton Road at Nichwagh Lake, between Nine Mile and Ten Mile roads.
