Edward Offutt settled here in 1714 and the crossroads carried his name through two centuries as Offutts Crossroads. In 1881 an Irish Civil War veteran named John McDonald had it renamed Potomac, because the Post Office wanted shorter names and there were already too many crossroads in the county. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and Great Falls are close by, with the Great Falls Tavern still standing on the towpath. Potomac remains an unincorporated place in Montgomery County, with 47,018 residents at the 2020 census.
