The Amana Colonies are seven villages spread across a river valley tract of some twenty-six thousand acres, about twenty miles west-northwest of Iowa City and near the Iowa River. German immigrants of the Community of True Inspiration founded them in 1855 after leaving a settlement near Buffalo, New York, and the movement itself traces back to Pietist faith renewal in Germany in 1714. Six villages came first, Amana, East Amana, West Amana, South Amana, High Amana and Middle Amana, and Homestead was added in 1861 to give the colony access to the railroad. Under communal life a member received a house, meals, medical care, household necessities and schooling, with property and resources held in common. The seven villages together are a National Historic Landmark.
