Ocoee is a fast-growing suburban city in metropolitan Orlando, home to nearly 50,000 people who share one city but many different schedules. A distance session lets each resident choose a quiet corner at home, wherever in Ocoee that home sits.
Ocoee was founded in the 1850s and first carried the name Starke Lake, after its founder Dr. J.D. Starke. The later name comes from a Tennessee river, and that river's name traces to the Cherokee word uwagahi, meaning apricot vine place. Ocoee also hosted the first commercial citrus nursery in the United States, which gives this west Orange County city a distinct agricultural root. Ocoee also carries the 1920 Ocoee Massacre, the deadliest Election Day violence in U.S. history, as a heavy part of its story. Distance sessions for Ocoee residents can honor that whole story, from the apricot vine place to the lake, with quiet respect.
