In 1768 Andrew Turnbull landed roughly twelve hundred Minorcans, Greeks and Italians here, the largest single group of settlers brought to any British colony in North America, and coquina ruins from that attempt still sit downtown. In 1768 the Scottish physician Andrew Turnbull landed about thirteen hundred colonists here, most of them from Menorca, and named the place for Smyrna, his wife's birthplace. Insect-borne disease and raids destroyed the colony, and around the 1780s roughly six hundred survivors walked nearly seventy miles north on the King's Road to St Augustine. Turnbull abandoned the settlement in 1783 when the Floridas went back to Spain. The town incorporated in 1887 with a hundred and fifty people and became New Smyrna Beach in 1947 on annexing Coronado Beach. The Stone Wharf was shelled by Union gunboats in 1863.
